Tell you
more about what is available and what to consider when deciding on a
Chinese Calligraphy art piece?
How can
the artwork be customized?
| Besides the Asian Characters you may also specify
the following:
Should I have my artwork mounted, matted?
Artwork matting - Our Calligraphy
ToGo special includes matting of the artwork. Matting
is available in many colors (see mat
colors).
Matting is a good way of finishing off an artwork for a gift
without the added cost of a frame. If your artwork is a
gift and is to be shipped directly to the recipient, we suggest
that it be matted. At Green Dragon
Arts we have two standard sizes 11x14 mats ( for
8x10 artwork) and 8x10 mats (5x7 artwork), all frame shops also
do matting and can usually mat non-standard sizes.
Artwork mounted - Mounting involves the adhering of the
artwork on to a heavy weight backboard. Mounting is usually on necessary if the artwork is created on very thing paper. While Green Dragon Arts at times use very thin paper (usually at the request of our customer), the paper that we use most and prefer to use is a heavy weight acid free art quality paper. Mounting provides protection
to the artwork as well removes the waves (wrinkles) due to the
ink. ( see also our section on inks)
by forcing the artwork on to a flat surface.
Artwork Only - This includes just the artwork.
This option is available to allow our customers to put on their
own unique finishing touches, i.e. framing, matting etc. Note
that this is "unfinished". One thing to consider
is that until mounted or framed the artwork may not lay flat. This
is due to the interaction between the paper and the traditional
ink that we use, this is significant when either the paper
used is thin or the characters written are large.

our calligraphy catalog you will find an extensive collection of some

created
What
word or phrase do you want on the artwork?
You
can choose from our extensive catalog of phrases, we can work with
you to develop a special phrase or you can provide your own copy..
Can
you translate what I have in English to Chinese calligraphy?
Yes
we can. However,
the accuracy of the translation varies with the complexity of the thought being expressed. Simple expressions and things are usually not a problem, for example translating a simple expression like "Happy Birthday" is not a problem. For complex thoughts, ideas and expression that may have multiple meaning even in English, the chances of an incorrect translation also increases. For instance poems in English that have subtle meanings are very difficult to translate.
What
if I have the Chinese word in English?
Chinese
words translated phonetically into English may not translate back to
the original word. For example the name "Wong", is a very common Chinese family name but there are actually two Chinese family names that would translate to the English "Wong". So if we were asked to write the Chinese charactor for Wong we would not not know with it would be.
What
if I have the actual Chinese Characters?
This
is the only way to ensure an exact duplication of what you want in
Chinese calligraphy. If you have the characters as an attachment
please send with your order form. Green Dragon Arts also has
the ability to read most Asian fonts.

What calligraphy
styles are available?
We have categorized
calligraphy into three styles: Classic, Semi Cursive and Cursive. For
good examples of these three styles, see our Dragon
Series. If you don't specify the style Tsai Yung will choose
one that he feels is most appropriate.

What
should be the size of the artwork?
In general, the largest size artwork that we create is 11"x14". Artwork size is
the size of paper that the calligraphy is created on. When specifying the artwork size please provide the width and height desired.
When
deciding on a size consider the following:
The
number of characters that will be on the artwork. Remember,
for the same size paper, the more characters means each character
will be smaller. Also account for some space along the
border for framing or matting.
-
Framing
- Standard size works are less expensive to frame
-
Location
- This where the artwork will be displayed and how far away from the artwork most people will view it from.
Can I specify the size of the calligraphy character?
If
you need a specific size character please let us know that you are giviing us the character
size. You can specify either the height
or the width of the character. For example if you give us the height, the width of the character will be whatever it needs to be for it to be in proper proportion to the height.
